Get The Most Out Of Your Office Renovations

By , May 10, 2012

The idea of renovating an office can be scary, especially if you are considering doing it yourself. The do it yourself trend may have you thinking of sprucing up your workspace without paying for a costly interior designer or contractor. Offices in desperate need of repair may require a few bold additions, but many offices and rooms can be completely made over with a few smartly selected statement pieces. Here are a few great tips and ideas to make your office renovations go smoothly.

Before any major renovation project is taken on it is important to clearly define your goals. Try to pick three words to describe the look you want to achieve, and chose one phrase that defines the function of your office. This way you will be consistent in your descriptions as you go from store to store for supplies and ideas.

Painting is a fantastic way to spice up an office. Most office spaces are barren and white, so adding a splash of color can completely change the aura of the room. Painting is laborious but simple, which makes it the perfect starting point. Plus, there are several stylistic techniques if you want to do more than just a solid color. Rooms may be painted with vertical or horizontal stripes to add some dimension.

Redecorating is common, and probably a good idea. Your contractor might handle this, though it is more likely they will leave it up to you, or recommend an interior decorator. An interior decorator usually will suggest adding paintings to your walls, or offer suggestions for window dressings. Spending time and money on interior decorating may not make sense depending on the size and function of your office, but if you are remodeling to make the space nicer, it might be worth it.

Depending on the function of your office, you might try adding some more stylish furniture. This technique is great for offices that have a waiting room area. An overstuffed chair in a corner can really bring a room to light, and is easy combined with coffee tables or end tables for a fuller look. Buying new furniture does not have to be expensive, there are hundreds of consignment companies and second hand stores carrying quality pieces for reasonable prices.

If you employ a receptionist, you might be wondering how to make their desk blend in to the room more. This is a common problem because many reception desks are added after the room was originally designed, making the desk look as if it were thrown there hastily. Eructing a low wall in front of the reception desk gives the space the illusion of purpose. If you are not feeling that brave, call in a contractor. Small additions like this are not overly expensive.

Your office may need more than a fresh coat of paint and some art depending on what your needs are. Adding walls can divide a space and create privacy. Walls can be erected to add an office or eliminate those dreaded removable cubicles, giving the area a look of permanence. Walls can go all the way to the ceiling or they might stop a few feet short of the ceiling. If your privacy needs permit it, keeping walls a foot or two short of the ceiling makes your office look much bigger.

It is possible to visually divide sections of your office without adding walls. Different sections can be floored differently. Changing the texture and type of the flooring from one area to another is a good idea, and is more defining than simply using different colors. Go from carpet to wood or tile, or add a large rug if your floor is concrete. Faux wood flooring and tile are easy to install, and often can increase the market value of your space as well.
